THE NEW PROPER

Therapy for men

Greetings and welcome.

This practice offers therapy for men through individual, couples/marital, and group therapy.

At its core, this approach to therapy for men begins with the idea that much of what we have learned no longer serves the life we want to live. In many cases, these patterns develop as survival responses during periods when we lacked support or understanding. As a result, the mind relies on emotional reactions and mental shortcuts to manage stress.

Over time, however, these coping strategies can create repeated patterns of suffering. Even when this suffering is not obvious to others—or even to the individual—it is deeply felt by the person experiencing it. In many instances, this suffering stems from mental reactions to psychological, social, spiritual, and familial expectations.

As these expectations accumulate, they often lead to harsh self-judgments about how we are “supposed” to be or what is considered “proper.” Consequently, we begin measuring ourselves against external standards rather than our authentic needs. In turn, this reinforces patterns of stress, disconnection, and inner conflict.

Here, we put this idea to the test by proposing that The New Proper is a conscious determination of how we choose to live our lives. Rather than pursuing a hedonistic lifestyle driven by short-term, surface-level euphoria, this approach emphasizes long-term fulfillment and well-being.

In doing so, it represents a philosophical shift toward what is known as eudaemonia. Often referred to as eudaemonics, this concept describes a state of human flourishing—one rooted in meaning, purpose, and fulfillment—rather than the pursuit of fleeting pleasure alone.

How do we do this?

We begin by developing attention. In this therapy for men, attention is not viewed as something you either have or don’t have. Instead, it is understood as a skill that can be cultivated.

Through experimentation and consistent practice, we learn concepts that strengthen attentional control. As this skill develops, we begin to integrate meaning into our attention and use it as a guide for self-development.

Over time, this process allows us to understand ourselves more deeply. Specifically, we learn to recognize patterns of behavior as they unfold within our awareness. By doing so, we see how our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations relate to one another. As a result, we are better able to work through difficult experiences with clarity, resilience, and self-understanding.

As attentional control continues to grow, an important marker of progress is the quality of attention over time. You may notice your awareness expanding, which allows you to consciously shape how you relate to your experiences—especially your emotions.

Rather than attempting to eliminate or suppress emotions, this practice encourages a different relationship with them. While getting rid of emotions altogether is not possible, the work lies in learning how to meet them with greater awareness, choice, and understanding.

Ultimately, we are guided by values we have consciously chosen. These values reflect a desire to be seen, felt, and heard without allowing emotional conditions to take priority. Instead, we prioritize awareness—an awareness built through the skill of attention and strengthened through ongoing practice.

I just wanted you to know that although I have much to be thankful for today, I am still most incredibly thankful for everything you have done for me. There is hardly a day that goes by where I don’t think about how far I’ve come and who is responsible for getting me to this point.
